There is no direct answer to the question- What is Satsang? The primordial meaning of the Sanskrit word Sat means Truth and Sang means gathering. In essence it is a completely lending yourself to the sacred mystery of Truth. Falling in love with Satsang feels like a magnet pulling on your heart. It is the same feeling you get while watching a beautiful Sunset or listening to the soft sound of a babbling creek. It is completely unexplainable yet knowable. Something always has you wanting more, but there is not a particular reason. The wanting is not the same as a material wanting. It is an absolute burning to know Love. No matter what anyone says, all humans want love. Satsang is the place to fill you up with what you having been seeking for externally to allow you to discover what you are looking for is already within. A metaphor for the search for Enlightenment is like looking for sunglasses while they are sitting on top of your head.
Any lovers of Sat (truth) cannot always give a direct reason for why they seek Satsang. Satsang has no purpose and cannot be measured by results. This sometimes can be difficult for a seeker because the world is set up in way that you should only attend to things that have goals and are measurable. To show up with no reason and without purpose is quite different from the expected pressures society places on human behavior.
The love of Sat is an inner pull, a burn that takes you back to the innocent feeling of the first time you fell in love. With this deep innocent love, if you are asked how you know you love, any material answers will not speak of what is felt. The feeling is indescribable and so it is the same with Satsang.
When you are willing to stop all ideas of changing the now for a future result, then you are able to greet Satsang with tender care. Attempting to stop the now is playing God and going against the natural rhythm of your being. Losing why, purpose, and dropping the belief that you need to attain something, you open space within yourself to discover what you have always been. As Ramana Marashi said, “Be as You are”.
Sat is wildly radically not what a normal human accepts and lives in as the obvious character of reality. Satsang in essence is a collision set to break your individual identity. It is described as a collision because it enacts as an explosion of Dissonance with everything you believed was real. This is because Sat and what every human knows instinctively about life are Non-congruent in essentially every way. It appears to be a discussion between two human beings, but it is not so. It is a mysterious piercing of individuality to bring about the end of all stories that are based on the sense that reality is a product time and phenomenon.
If you have a burning desire to know what you are behind the mask of identity, keep running to Satsang. Show up at Satsang naked and the Beloved will happily meet you. As Nisargadata said, “Do as the Sages say and see if it works.”
